The History of The Art Center Music School
The Art Center Music School insist in expanding opportunities to the youth of Detroit. Reaching out to at risk youth, thru education, and the fine arts provide them with the mindset to achieve a bright future; by providing them with security and exposing them to fine arts, as well as, providing the community with a center, devoted to individual student achievements.
In 1922 the Art Center Music School was first established, and is presently Detroit’s oldest ongoing school of music, whose mission is to provide quality music instruction to low and moderate income families at affordable rates.
Musicians formally involved with the school include Bernhard Heiden ,Opera stars George Shirley and Kathleen Battle, World renowned pianist Ruth Laredo and Hugh Downs the Emmy-Award -winning co-news anchor of the ABC NEWS show 20/20 and inductee into the American TV Game Show Hall of Fame broadcasters.
In 1952, the Art Center School president, Dr. Amos Ebersole and spouse Dr. Nellie Ebersole, purchased the school. Upon Dr. Nellie Ebersole's death in 1991, her estate assigned the Board of Directors of the Art Center Music School as its beneficiary with providing a superior level of training in the arts, for the students.

Professional opera singer, archivist, activist and an educator for 30 years Mr. William H. Broyles Jr. was appointed Executive Director of the Art Center Music School. Under this new direction Mr. Broyles has been able to execute a rehabilitation of the Art Center Music School with repairs and program planning that includes the merging of music, math and technology. The school's new mission statement is "Education and the creative arts are one."
